Laos

Laos is the only country in Southeast Asia entirely surrounded by land. Because there is no coastline Laos has been an isolated country for a long time.

The country is almost 6 times as big as the Netherlands and there are about 7 million inhabitants with a yearly population growth of 1.66%. The average life expectancy is 62.77 years, for women the life expectancy is a little higher.

About 39% of the population is illiterate. In spite of the growth over the past years Laos still is a poor country: 33% of the population lives below the poverty threshold. Another reason for a foundation like Friends of the Khong District to work out small-scale projects in order to inspire, support and motivate the locals and in order to make their lives easier.

Vientiane is the capital city and also the country’s largest city. Second comes Savannakhet, followed by Luang Prabang and Pakse. Laos has an incredible natural heritage. There are stupendous rain forests, gorgeous mountains and charming rivers. Moreover, one of the most well-preserved cultures of Indochina can be found in Laos.
